Erin's world turned upside down on May 15, 2024, when a devastating accident changed everything. Her husband, Rick, a hazmat tanker driver, was severely burned when a chemical explosion sprayed him with sodium hydroxide. Rushing from her Pittsburgh salon to a Cleveland hospital, Erin learned that Rick had burns over 50% of his body—an injury that would require numerous surgeries and months of intense recovery.
The first weeks were a blur of hospital visits, sleepless nights, and miles on the road. In just 60 days, Erin drove over 10,000 miles, splitting her time between caring for Rick in Cleveland and, managing her salon and caring for their three dogs at home in Pittsburgh. It was a constant battle of trying to be everywhere at once—by Rick's side during crucial surgeries, at home managing daily life and at work to keep her business afloat. As she watched Rick endure pain and procedures, Erin's own emotional toll grew heavy, leading to severe PTSD from those early traumatic days.
Recognizing the need for a support system and resources, Erin turned to Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors. She initially discovered Phoenix Society during her own research, but the recommendation of their worker's comp case worker encouraged her to dive deeper.
Soon after finding Phoenix Society, Erin and Rick began attending Phoenix Society's Virtual Support Group together. Through support groups, Erin found validation as a caregiver—learning that while she might not bear physical scars, her emotional journey was just as significant. The group offered practical advice, like ways to ease Rick's discomfort during sleep, and gave Erin the encouragement she needed to keep going.
For Erin, listening to other burn survivors gave her insights into what Rick might be feeling but can't always express. It also allowed her to connect deeply with those who shared similar experiences. One day, a fellow participant's words deeply resonated: "You are a part of this community, just in a different way." It was a moment of affirmation that lifted her spirit, reminding her that caregivers play a critical role in the recovery journey.
As Erin and Rick continue to navigate their path toward healing, they look forward to connecting with the broader community at the upcoming Phoenix World Burn Congress. Erin knows that while the journey never truly "ends," she is taking it one day at a time, learning to celebrate the small wins, and finding strength and support from the burn community. Her advice for other caregivers is never to be afraid to ask for help and to take care of yourself—something she is still learning to balance and prioritize.
