Each year, 40,000 people are hospitalized with burn injuries. Every burn survivor reflects a unique story of pain, healing, and a lifelong journey of recovery. At the Phoenix Society, we believe that no survivor should have to carry that story alone.
Phoenix Advocates are burn survivors, loved ones of burn survivors, healthcare professionals, and fire service advocates working in a coordinated effort for change. We believe that by bringing together our individual stories and raising our voice as a burn community, we can increase understanding of burn issues, improve burn prevention efforts, and reach more burn survivors.
As the only national organization with a primary focus of helping burn survivors everywhere get back to living, our advocacy relates to three areas:
Burn Aftercare and Access to Support
Increasing access to quality burn care and resources to assist the whole family's healing from burn trauma
We work with the burn care medical community to understand the need for long-term burn care and to expand access to recovery programs such as peer support, educational materials, and community reentry resources.
Working to decrease the number of burn injuries
Our advocacy efforts are focused on preventing burn injuries and death through code adoptions and legislative initiatives that make our communities safer. By adding the voice of those who truly understand the impact of burns on the community, we are helping to make permanent change. Quality of Life
Advancing research and program development focused on interventions that improve long-term quality of life
Our community is actively participating in research studies focused on interventions that support and enhance quality of life for those living with a burn injury in the family. Read more about our research participation efforts in our blog.
