Phoenix UBelong Kicks It Off!
By Angela Seitz, Phoenix UBelong Volunteer
Gathered together in our orange and teal shirts, Wednesday's kick-off event gave Phoenix UBelong staff, volunteers and families the opportunity to get to get to know each other, laugh, and have fun.
Since Indianapolis is a city centered around sports, our ice breaker activities reflected this sports theme. We enjoyed friendly competition and lots of laughter during our football toss "minute to win it" game. Our pennant craft activity gave participants a chance to start conversations and also allowed them to make something of their own to hang in the hallways throughout the UBelong Youth and Teen area. (The kids and teens have loved seeing these throughout the week.) The pennant craft activity also had a therapeutic component, allowing the kids and teens to be creative and to describe themselves or their favorite things.
Families also had the chance to partake in the Phoenix UBelong photo booth, which included Indy and sports themed props.
Having all these activities during the kick off event helped participants get more comfortable with the Phoenix UBelong staff and also with other kids and families that are participating in the conference. It is a welcoming time for kids and teens to feel at ease and get familiar with the people that they will be with and working with the rest of the week.
We would like to extend our special thanks to this year's Phoenix UBelong sponsors: Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation, Shirtners Hospitals for Children - Cincinnati, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and Children's Burn Foundation.
