Phoenix SOAR Program Welcomes New Volunteers at Phoenix WBC Training Session!

Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors is welcoming new members to our growing Phoenix SOAR family!  Phoenix SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) training sessions were conducted at Phoenix World Burn Congress 2015 where new members were trained and additional training was offered for existing members to continue to strengthen the program.

Phoenix SOAR connects burn patients and their loved ones to a compassionate community of people who share the experience of a burn injury - from someone who's 'been there'.  The purpose of the program is simple yet powerful: that no survivor of a burn injury should feel alone as they make this journey.

The newest hospital joining our Phoenix SOAR family is MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, OH.  Welcome!

On Tuesday, October 20, Phoenix Society welcomed representatives to the Phoenix SOAR Instructor training class from:

  • University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA
  • Children's Hospital Burn Center, Denver CO
  • Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Charlestown, MA
  • Lions Burn Center at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas, NV
  • Community Regional Burn Center, Fresno, CA

A training class was also conducted for Phoenix SOAR Coordinators. The coordinator and instructors are critical roles for the Phoenix SOAR program and allows for overseeing the program at a local level, providing quality training, and coordinating peer supporters visits with patients.  Attendees at the Coordinator training session included:

  • University of Texas Medical Branch Blocker Burn Unit, Galveston, TX
  • Ohio State University Center for Burn Care, Columbus, OH
  • Community Regional Burn Center, Fresno, CA

Phoenix SOAR is a hospital-based program designed by Phoenix Society and a national committee of experts to train burn survivors and their families, so they may volunteer as peer supporters for other burn patients and their families. Because the sooner burn survivors connect to resources and caring people, the sooner they can get back to living!
