Participate in a Research Study - Social Skills Training!
To Burn Survivors and Family and Friends of Burn Survivors:
Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors would like to invite you to participate in an online research study for survivors of burn injury and their friends or family members. The primary goal of this study is to see the effects of a Social Skills Training program titled “Beyond Surviving … Tools for Thriving after a Burn Injury” in reducing social anxiety and improving community participation among burn survivors.
The Phoenix Society in collaboration with UT Southwestern and the North Texas Burn Rehabilitation Model System is conducting this research study to assess the effectiveness of the online Social Skills Training program. You are eligible for this study if you are a burn survivor or family/friend of a burn survivor and English speaking.
We are requesting your participation in this study to see how effective the Social Skills Training program is on improving psychological and social adjustments for burn survivors and their family and friends. If you decide you want to participate, please follow the instructions listed below:

- After you login, on the next page click on “Self-Assign” on the left hand margin of the screen
- On the Self-Assign page, choose the program “Phoenix Society Online Learning Community – Beyond Surviving – Tools for Thriving after a Burn Injury.”

STEP 1: Consider Participating in Research Study
STEP 2: Check the box provided if you are interested in participating in the study. Click on the Consent Form link to read the whole form.
STEP 3: If you consent to participate in the study, you will be required to complete a pre-study survey (by clicking on the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/ If you do not wish to participate in the study, you may skip STEP 3 and go to STEP 4 to watch the online training program.
STEP 4: Study participants will watch the online training program after completing STEP 3 (pre-study survey)
If you consented to participate, you will receive an email from the study personnel with a link (surveymonkey) to complete post study survey within a week from your completion of training and again at 6-months after completion of your training.
Each set of questions will take 10-15 minutes to complete. The surveys include questions about your social confidence and practice of the skills covered in the training. We also will ask for some demographic and burn injury information (e.g., age, gender, mechanism of injury, percent burn area) so that we can accurately describe the general traits of the group who participate in the study. In addition, we will ask you questions regarding technical issues and relevancy of content of the training program.
There are minimal risks associated with this study, which include the potential of loss of confidentiality.
