The Volks at Buses by the Beach had a lot of fun at their Halloween themed event Bus Boo!! The event was held the last weekend of September and marked the return of fall for the 14th year. Summer like weather greeted campers as they rolled into Grand Rogue Campground in their vintage VW's, 46 buses in all from all over the mid-west. The campground is situated at the confluence of the Grand and Rogue rivers near Grand Rapids Michigan and has been the gracious host for many years.
Bus pilots and their family members enjoyed campfires and conversation on Friday night as everyone got settled in for the weekend. Old acquaintances were renewed and new friendships were made. Perfect weather greeted everyone Saturday morning. As morning turned to afternoon participants began their preparations for the many contests to be held. One saw ghouls and goblins, dinosaurs and super heroes, pirates and other characters wandering the campground. Pumpkins were carved up, camp sites were decorated and Volks toiled over cauldrons of chili. Later, as judges tasted the 24 chilis that were entered, winners were chosen for best adult costume (David Woods/ pirate), best child costume (Lily Ryan for the second year in a row!/ Legolas the Elf), best group costume (The Start Family/ Lego land), best site decoration (Lisa Ramos/ Bus decorated like a Butterfinger candy bar) and, best carved pumpkin (Cecile Slattery/ Bus boo logo). Finally the moment arrived that all the hungry campers had waited for, The 10th annual Bus Boo!! Chili Cookoff. 1st time attendee Teresa Hill was the winner and added her name to the coveted VW Hubcap trophy.
As evening turned to night kids trick or treated from bus to bus and the air was filed with sounds from Buses by the Beach house band Loose Meat Sandwich. throughout the night they were joined by other campers with their instruments who were referred to as "the condiments". The group drew a crowd as they worked their way through many familiar classic tunes.
Sunday morning dawned and the campground came to life once again as the exceptional weather continued. Wanting to be sure the group never goes home hungry, the Volks at Buses by the Beach arranged for fresh deep fried doughnuts, dipped in their choice of glaze or choloclate, for everyone. Many thanks to Kirt Weakman and Dave Stroschein for their hard work! Fianllt it was time to leave. Camps were packed up, goodbyes were said and everyone was wished "Miles of Smiles" as they departed for home.
