2016 Hickey Award
Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation: 2016 Hickey Award Recipient
The 2016 Joseph Hickey Fire Service Award was presented to the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation (GFBF) in recognition of its “visionary and dedicated service to the burn community.” Accepting on behalf of the Foundation was its executive director, Dennis Gardin. The award honors a firefighter or firefighter burn foundation that provides assistance to burn survivors, demonstrates a commitment to improve burn care through all phases of recovery, and works to carry on the mission of the Phoenix Society and the local burn community.
In the 34 years since its inception (originally as the DeKalb Firefighters Burn Foundation), GFBF has provided support and leadership in the burn prevention and recovery field. The foundation, which served as a local host for Phoenix World Burn Congress in 1999, offers a number of programs and services, including summer and winter burn camps; burn retreats; school re-entry; scholarships for postsecondary education; and sponsorship and/or financial assistance for conference, convention, or workshop attendance, including Phoenix WBC. GFBF is also active in public safety education and burn/fire prevention.
