Grief and Loss Grief and loss are two universal happenings all people will experience at some point in their lifetime. Some may experience more than others, but at some point, each of us is affected by it in some way. Grief can be defined as the emotions and sensations that accompany the loss of someone or something dear to us. Grief can be experienced in many different ways, and no two people will grieve in the same way. We all grieve at our own pace. It is important to be supportive of those going through their grief journey to let them do it their way and be supportive by following their lead.
A person who has had a burn injury can go through many different types of grief and loss. The person can grieve for their former self, their injuries, or even the loss of control. These types of loss should not be ignored; they should be acknowledged and addressed so the person can work through their recovery. Photograph by Kerry Gerot, Copyright 2007
