Emotional Recovery

The Phoenix Society assists in helping burn survivors meet the emotional challenges in recovery, providing the community support and tools they need to thrive again. World Burn Congress is one method in which the Phoenix Society helps survivors get back to living; WBC is a forum in which we encourage and facilitate the sharing of stories, provide support and increase knowledge of burn recovery. For many it is the first opportunity to meet and share with others who have experienced a burn trauma.

Incidence of Burn Injuries

According to the American Burn Association there are one million burn injuries in the USA annually and an estimated 45,000 hospitalizations.  About half of those hospitalizations are admitted to the 125 specialized burn treatment centers and the other half to the nation’s 5,000 hospitals.  It is estimated that one third of these injuries are children.

Burn Centers

Burn Centers are specialized centers within a hosptial that have a dedicated team and area within the hospital to care for those with burn injuries.  Criteria has been established for the types of burn injuries that are recommended to be treated in a Burn Center.  This is called the Burn Center Referral Criteria.
