How to connect with another firefighter or family member who has experienced a line of duty burn injury:

Burn injured firefighters, family members, and others impacted by the injury can contact the Phoenix Society at firefightersupport@phoenix-society.org or call 1-800-888-2876.

Ask to be connected to a peer supporter or to learn more about this program.

An added benefit for burn injured firefighters and their family members of being connected to peer support through the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors’ confidential program is that they will receive additional support information automatically from the Phoenix Society.

When a firefighter suffers burns, the injury heals but recovery can take a lifetime.

The IAFF Burn Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation partnered with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors to develop a firefighter peer support component of their national Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR) program. This national program offers burn injured firefighters and their families one-on-one support from a trained firefighter peer supporter.

contact The Phoenix Society, and we will:

  • Gather information about your specific needs and circumstances if you are the burn survivor or family member requesting peer support.
  • Match you with a peer supporter in the SOAR database.
  • Follow up with resources and communication as requested by the survivor and/or family members.
  • Provide information and resources to those in the fire service who know of a firefighter who may benefit from peer support services.

MORE ON SOAR and firefighter peer support

  • Information obtained from focus groups with burn injured firefighters and their families was utilized to develop this program. It also helped us to identify specific needs of the firefighter when injured.
  • Firefighter peer support available for firefighters who may not have been burned, but have been impacted by a burn trauma incident.
  • Over the next year we will be developing this program with the help of those who have experienced a line of duty Injury and the fire service.
