The Journey Back

Resources to assist school reentry after burn injury

Girl w/ backpackReturning to school and being with peers is a very important step in a young burn survivor’s recovery. Our resource gives students a positive start and an opportunity for a better and faster recovery of their academic, physical, social, and emotional self.

Families, hospitals, burn support organizations, schools and communities all play a part in reentry after a burn injury. Everyone can imagine the student’s fears and concerns about returning to school. But what can you do? And how can The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors help?

The Journey Back is designed to:

  • Assist with the transition back to school and empower the returning student.
  • Inform faculty of the story of the returning student.
  • De mystify the injury for the student body and encourage empathy and

          tolerance to differences.

  • Offer information on prevention of fires/burns.
  • Provide tools to encourage positive social skills and coping techniques for

          the returning student and classmates.

What is included in these materials?

  • Introduction to the concept of school reentry.
  • Materials to prepare the family and survivor.
  • Information on planning a school reentry presentation.
  • Tools for educating the school faculty.
  • Sample materials to aid with documentation and correspondence.
