Dr. Lynn Solem, a native Minnesotan, attended college and medical school at the University of Minnesota from 1962 to 1969. Following medical school, he did a rotating medicine internship at St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center, followed by 9 months of an internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota affiliated hospitals. He served in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1973, during which his duty stations included Davisville and Newport, Rhode Island, South Pole Station in Antarctica, and Christchurch, New Zealand. Dr. Solem returned to St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center in 1973 and completed his surgical residency in 1977. Upon completion of his residency, he came on staff of the medical center and was burn director from 1980 to 2003.
Dr. Solem was chief of surgery at Regions Hospital from 1998 to 2003, as well as chief of surgery of HealthPartners Medical Group, a 23-person surgical department with sections of trauma, medical care, and surgery. Dr. Solem is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota. He shares his clinical responsibilities with an associate of more than 20 years, Dr. David Ahrenholz, and Dr. Bill Mohr. He has been active in the American Burn Association since 1976 and presented his first abstract in 1977. (He still feels his knees shaking 25 years later.) He has served on multiple committees of the American Burn Association, including the Education Committee, Organization and Delivery of Burn Care, the subcommittee of the Ad Hoc Committee on Burn Center Verification, the Committee on Regionalization, and the Verification Committee. One of his proudest accomplishments is to have introduced the idea of the traveling fellowship with the Education Committee.
Since December 2003, Dr. Solem and his wife Patty, who live in Afton, Minnesota, have spent several months a year providing burn care and education in underdeveloped countries, first in Belize and last winter in Tanzania. They enjoy their time outdoors, Patty riding a motorcycle and Dr. Solem fishing, and repairing and restoring cars. The Solems have four children, Tammy in Denver, Colorado, Tim in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Shawn and Ryan in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
