Jennifer Whitestone, a member of the burn care community, isn’t a doctor, nurse, or therapist, but rather a biomedical engineer who has used her training and experience to improve burn care. She began her career working for the United States Air Force (USAF) applying surface scanning technology for improving the fit of protective equipment and clothing for USAF pilots.
In 1998 she founded Total Contact to bring three-dimensional surface scanning technology to burn care. Since starting the business, she has generated more than 300 custom total contact burn masks for burn patients throughout the U.S. and Canada. With a grant from the National Institutes of Health, she is working toward development of a whole body scanner for assessing burn injuries and is successfully implementing scanning for other uses to improve burn care, including quantification of burn scars. Jennifer is Second Vice President for the Phoenix Society. |
