William Leahy or "Billy" was appointed as a firefighter to The Fire Department City of New York in October of 1997. After completion of his training at the fire academy he was assigned to Ladder Co. 6 in the Chinatown section of Manhattan. It was there that his involvement with the New York Firefighter's Burn Center Foundation began. A fellow firefighter who volunteered his time for the foundation and the burn community encouraged him to become active in the work of the foundation. The foundation has been in existence since 1975 and was instrumental in the creation of the burn center at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Billy has been involved in all aspects of the foundation since 1997. He has been a counselor at The Arthur Luf Children's Burn Camp since 2002, and has presented at the annual meeting of The American Burn Association on two occasions. He recently served on the host committee for the 2009 21st Annual Phoenix Society for Burn Survivor's World Burn Congress in New York City, which had the largest attendance in the history of the congress. Billy resides in Pearl River NY with his wife Nicole who is the director of outreach and community education for the burn center and their daughter Caitlin. |
